The ABC – islands  are located about 100 km offshore the Venezuelian coastline.

The Island of Bonaire

Area about 290 qkm. Population about 15.000. Half of them Europeans and Americans.

The capital is Kralendijk.

In the year 1499 the island was discovered by Spain. Later the Dutch took over the Island and started the sea salt production. Still visible by the slave huts in the south of the island. Sea salt is still been produced in large saltworks by the Cargil Salt Company.
Since 10.10.2010 bonaire is together with St.Eustatius und Saba (BES islands) an autonomic part of the Netherlands.

Common languages beside Dutch (official language) are English and Papiamentu, a language similar to Spanish. Even German is understood in many restaurants, shops and dive stations.

Bonaire is an all year round destination. Temperatures are between 26°C and 30°C and because of the permanent blowing Passat-wind easy to sustain.

Occasionally rain showers might occur from October until January, but they lasting only a short time. By the way: Bonaire is located outside the hurican belt.

The currency on Bonaire is the US-Dollar. Credit Cards will be accepted everywhere on the island. Even with an EC-Card incl. PIN-code your are able to get money from cash dispensers.

The living standard is comparable to this in Europe. Drinking water is extracted from the salt water of the sea and can be drunk without any doubt.

The goods available in the supermarkets are similar to European standards.
